Top new DVD/Blu-ray release announcements

Three ‘Best Picture’ award winners, the classic movie monster and a look into the life of Iron Mike will make the jump to high definition Blu-ray … here are the latest announcements for the week ending June 26th …

‘Tyson’
- This critically acclaimed look into the life of heavyweight boxer ‘Iron Mike’ Tyson includes a mixture of original interviews (mostly with Tyson himself) and archival footage.

‘Gladiator’
- The 2000 ‘Best Picture’ award-winning epic helps kickoff Paramount Home Entertainment’s new line of Blu-ray movies, the ‘Sapphire’ series of BD films. This special edition includes the original cut as well as an extended edition and a bonus disc packed with featurettes.

‘Braveheart’
- Mel Gibson’s masterpiece and the winner of the ‘Best Picture’ Oscar in 1995, ‘Braveheart’ is one of two films (alongside ‘Gladiator’) to premiere Paramount’s Sapphire line of Blu-ray movies. This HD release will include more than two hours of new special features — including historical background and new information on the film’s production.

‘Shaun of the Dead’
- One of the greatest zombie films of all time is finally coming to Blu-ray. The planned special features have not been announced yet.

‘Hot Fuzz’
- The second of two Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg films coming to Blu-ray in late September. The planned special features have not been announced yet.

‘Gojira’
- One of the great monster films of all time, the original 1954 edition of ‘Godzilla,’ is bound for a fall release in high-definition video. Special features have not be announced yet.

‘Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory’
- Forget the Tim Burton/Johnny Depp version — the original 1971 adaptation, is the definition vision of the ‘Chocolate Factory,’ is coming to Blu-ray in late October.Gene Wilder’s take on the candy mogul ranks among the great film characters of all time. No details on special features yet.

‘Forrest Gump’
- The film that solidified Tom Hanks (who had just won ‘Best Actor’ Oscar) as a legitimate dramatic actor is slated to be the third in the ‘Sapphire’ line of Blu-ray movies. This release will coincide with the 15th anniversary of ‘Gump.’ Special features have not be announced yet.

‘The Lord of the Rings: The Motion Picture Trilogy’
- Here’s something to put on your Christmas wishlist early. Arguably one of the greatest trilogies in film history will make the jump to Blu-ray just in time for ‘Black Friday’ and the holiday shopping season. This box set will contain the original theatrical cuts and digital copies of all three ‘LoTR’ movies. Movie geeks beware: these will NOT be the extended editions … those extended versions have not been scheduled for release yet. Special features have not be announced.

  1. I have only seen the firt LOTR. I have been planning to have a long SAT and watch all three but now with this news I guess I will wait untill NOV so I can get on Blu-ray and really get the full experience.
